Shakespeare and Company – Paris

shakespeare and company bookstore

I finally, finally visited the famous Shakespeare and Company (in Paris, France) last week and it was EVERYTHING. Such a wonderful, wonderful little bookstore. So many books! (So much HISTORY!) I have spent about… two hours browsing/reading there. It’s small (and from what I have heard, always cramped, so yay for off-season) – its two floors are crammed from top to bottom with books and some other… things. If you climb the narrow stairs, upstairs you’ll find (the YA section) a read-only library stacked with very old books. You can sit, relax and read in a room that’s right across the freakin’ Notre Dame. How awesome is that?! What’s more, there are people who actually write (their book/play) there, and it even has a resident CAT (white, fluffy and… very well-fed, hehe).

Since I needed THAT STAMP (and bag), I couldn’t leave without buying something. I bought Poster of Fate because an Agatha Christie I haven’t already read (will treasure it forever and ever) as well as The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (since seemed such a Parisian book choice, haha).

Though I only bought two books (S&co. is a bit pricey), I tried to memorise everything that caught my eyes. Here’s a list of the books I have seen and remembered: For Today I Am a Boy, Grasshopper, lots of Agatha Christie and Murakami Haruki, Revival by Stephen King, HorrorstörOrlando, that Krasznahorkai book, Pride and Prejudice, other Austen books, Around the World in Eighty Days, illustrated The Little Prince, Harry Potter books (couldn’t find the first one though), A Monster Calls, More Than ThisBoy21Wicked and Son of a WitchAll the Bright Places and The Invisible Man.

Ahhhh~ Hopefully, I’ll have more chances to acquire books from this bookstore. Because, like Paris, Shakespeare and Company is definitely worth more than one visit. (Have you been there? Or, do you have a fave independent bookstore?)
