Glass Magic in Murano

IMG_7270Regrettably, we only had time a very brief stop on the island of Murano, but we did get to watch a glass blowing demonstration (something I was really looking forward to) as well as have a super quick walk around the… main street/canal, I guess… and by chance spotted that huge glass sculpture above (I know there are many more scattered around on this tiny island so… another time more time!!).

Shiny things, I love them. (Though I don’t want/need to buy anything, just really enjoy looking at them.) I remember admiring the colourful little glass animals and glass adornments at the shops during our last (first) time in Venice and wow looking at the master creating them right before our eyes was like watching magic happen. The way he yields and shapes the scorching hot melting glass – amazing craftsmanship. And it was so quick. One moment is was a fiery red bubble, the next – with a pinch here and a pinch there – it turned into a horse.

From the little I have seen/heard from our guide, Murano is like… a sleeping island. Aside from those few remaining glass factories, there is not much going on there. And did you know, in the old times, it was forbidden for the glassmakers to leave Murano (to keep the secrets of the craft), save for like once a year? Crazy. But the job while demanding did have some pretty sweet perks as well. Glassmakers were highly honoured, even allowed to marry into the Venetian aristocracy. And after watching the demo and then seeing the masterpieces in the shop, I think it is still one of the coolest professions ever. 😉

Have you ever been in Murano? Or seen a glasssmith in action?
